The Answer, Yes!
Tennis elbow & Golfer's elbow are inflammatory conditions of the tendons that attach to the elbow due to repetitive strain.
With all the outdoor activities in and around Kamloops, we often see patients who experience these ailments. Common activities that may cause it include down hill biking, bowling, typing on a computer, playing racket sports, golfing, carpentry, heavy machine operating, and more.
Acupuncture can be an effective treatment for tennis and golfer's elbow by promoting blood flow, reducing inflammation, regulating the nervous system and releasing painful trigger points in the muscle fibers that can often cause pain. When acupuncture is used on specific points, it triggers the release of endorphins and other natural painkillers, reducing pain and stiffness. Acupuncture also helps to reduce muscle tension and improve range of motion in the affected joint. With tennis elbow & golfer's elbow, it is always better to get in for treatment at the first signs of discomfort before your symptoms become chronic.
How many acupuncture treatments are needed and how long does it take to work?
Typically you will have a decrease of your symptoms after 1 appointment with significant pain relief after 3. We say 3-8 appointments may be necessary for your full recovery as treatments vary depending on the severity of the issue and if you are able to take a break from the repetitive strain that initially caused the problem.
Is acupuncture or massage better to Treat Tennis or Golfer's Elbow?
We always recommend Acupuncture before massage for this specific ailment. Massage can sometimes aggravate the already inflamed area whereas acupuncture has an anti-inflammatory effect. That’s not to say that massage won’t be helpful for you, we’ve just noticed by experience that acupuncture seems to be less aggravating to the area.
Are the acupuncture needles painful?
No! They are the width of a hair. You may experience soreness after the treatment as we usually needle into trigger points (muscle knots). This is similar to the feeling you have after a deep tissue massage. You can learn more about the different points an Acupuncturist uses in treatment on our other blog post: Acupuncture Point Vs.
